Sider Road’s ‘low volume’ means provincial standards don’t apply

A road in rural Stevensville is in the poorest condition of all roads in Niagara, and it’s the eighth-worst in the province.
That’s according to CAA’s 2025 worst roads campaign, an annual survey that asks for votes on which thoroughfares are in rough shape.
Rhiannon Fleming, communications consultant with CAA Niagara, said Sider Road has “steadily climbed” the list in recent years.
Aside from the unflattering mentions it has received this time around, Sider Road was also considered the fourth-worst road in Niagara in 2024, and was in the regional top 10 in 2023 as well.
Fleming also told Fort Erie Radio that CAA Niagara doesn’t “disclose the total number of votes received per road.”
In a statement provided by Town of Fort Erie communications staff on behalf of the roads department, it’s pointed out that Sider is a Class 6 road, meaning provincial maintenance standards do not apply to it because of its “low volume.”
It is a granular road that receives an application of dust suppressant once per year, typically in June.
The town said it is graded a minimum of three times per year, in the spring or early summer.
Additional surface maintenance is performed on an as-needed basis to fill in potholes with additional granular material at other times of the year, the town said.
There were no other roads in Niagara to make the top 10 provincial-worst list.
