Fort Erie declares significant weather event as heavy snow blankets town

The Town of Fort Erie has declared a significant weather event as heavy snowfall and dangerous winter conditions move through the area.

Infrastructure Services issued the declaration at 1 p.m. Sunday after Environment Canada placed the region under a snowfall warning calling for 20 to 35 centimetres of snow, reduced visibility from heavy and blowing snow, and extremely cold temperatures, according to a town news release.

A significant weather event is declared when severe conditions may pose a danger to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, and signals that winter maintenance crews may not be able to meet Ontario’s minimum maintenance standards until conditions improve.

Town officials are urging residents to use extreme caution or avoid travel altogether while the warning remains in effect. Municipal staff are continuing to monitor weather conditions and impacts on local services.

Residents are reminded to check on vulnerable neighbours and to make use of available warming stations if needed. Full weather updates are available through Environment Canada.

Power outages can be reported to Canadian Niagara Power at (905) 871-0330. In an emergency, residents are advised to call 911.
