George Road stabbing leaves woman with life-threatening injuries

A 27-year-old Fort Erie man is charged with attempted murder after a stabbing at a George Road residence early Saturday.

Niagara Regional Police Service 5 District officers were called to the residence at about 5:45 a.m. on January 24 for a reported disturbance. The officers were told en route that a woman had been stabbed several times and fled the residence.

When they arrived, the officers helped with evacuating the victims and neighbouring apartments. Niagara Emergency Medical Services took one woman to an out-of-region hospital with life-threatening injuries and treated a second woman for minor injuries at the scene.

The Emergency Task Unit and Canine Unit attended to help with containment. Officers began negotiations with a man inside the residence. At 10:21 a.m. the man exited and was arrested without incident.

The suspect was charged with attempted murder, intimidation by violence and two counts of assault.

Sassano remains in custody and is scheduled to attend a bail hearing Sunday at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse at 59 Church Street in St. Catharines, according to police.

Police say the victim and the accused are known to each other and there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (905) 688-4111.
