McDonald’s coffee prices aren’t what they used to be, but on Thursday, 50 cents from every cup sold at two locations were donated to Community Living Fort Erie.
The fundraiser supported programs that help young people with intellectual challenges build skills for adult life, including gaining job experience, confidence and independence.

Community Living volunteers staffed tables from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the Garrison Road and Ridgeway McDonald’s locations to explain how the nonprofit supports youth and adults through residential services, employment preparation and family support.
âItâs a wonderful place to volunteer and everyone is helping me volunteer with Community Living Fort Erie,â said volunteer Joe Kissmann to Fort Erie Radio.
Kissmann has volunteered with Community Living Fort Erie on and off for years, and, though itâs not much, 50 cents help support programs that have transformed his life.
âI donât move, however, change, it moves life,â said Kissmann.
Staff member Kristina Phillips told Fort Erie Radio that many residents do not realize how many families rely on the organizationâs services.
She said people would be surprised by the number of individuals supported in a small town like Fort Erie, and that seeing people welcomed and valued in the community has kept her and her family committed to working with Community Living for more than 20 years.
âI grew up with it and it has been such a big part of my life,â said Phillips.
Programs range from residential support to the Transitional Age Youth employment program, which offers training, placements and volunteer opportunities for people aged 14 to 26. Staff guide participants through building resumes, gaining certifications and work experience while helping with skills needed for independence.
The nonprofit also offers supported living, community participation programs, family support services and one-to-one assistance through its passport program. Many of these services receive limited government funding, making local partnerships like the hot beverages fundraiser essential.
Phillips said sales were steady throughout the day at both McDonaldâs sites and that any amount helps stretch resources.
Kissmann suggested that anyone wishing to donate their time can do so by visiting the groupâs website to find volunteer opportunities in different roles.
Another chance to give is happening November 17 to 23 at the Tim Hortons on Garrison Road near Central Avenue which will donate $1 from each $2 Smile Cookie sold to the same cause.
Pre-order forms are available now through Community Living Fort Erie’s social media channels for anyone planning bulk purchases.
