Town hosts first attainable housing symposium

The Town of Fort Erie held its first Attainable Housing Symposium late last month, bringing together developers, builders, and community partners to explore solutions to the municipality’s growing housing challenges.

According to a news release issued Tuesday by the Town of Fort Erie, the October 22 event was organized in partnership with the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and focused on practical strategies to improve access to affordable and attainable housing options locally.

Participants discussed barriers to home ownership and rental affordability, shared ideas, and examined a regional case study that highlighted successful approaches to attainable housing.

“The strong turnout and meaningful dialogue we saw at this event show how committed our community is to addressing housing needs,” said Edward Terry, the town’s manager of policy and community planning, in the release.

“This is an important step toward building partnerships and finding creative, sustainable solutions that make Fort Erie a place where everyone can find a home they can afford.”

As part of the town’s ongoing housing initiatives, residents are invited to attend a free film screening of ‘Thinking Beyond the Market,’ a documentary by Dr. Brian Doucet, professor of planning at the University of Waterloo.

The event will take place November 26, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Greater Fort Erie Secondary School on Garrison Road and will include a Q&A session with Doucet following the film.
