SPCA to hold 12th annual Dog Walk-A-Thon this Sunday

Dogs, students and families will gather at Waverly Beach this weekend to support the Fort Erie SPCA’s ongoing mission.

The event begins with registration at 10 a.m. followed by a 10:30 a.m. walk along the Friendship Trail starting at the south end of Helena Street. Pledges will directly support animals in care, and families without dogs are welcome to join.

Wendy Trombley, SPCA manager, told Fort Erie Radio she’s expecting over 40 people based on the success of previous walk-a-thons she has organized.

Water stations will be set up along the route for dogs, and prizes will be awarded to participants who collect the most pledges. Students who raise pledges of $50 or more for the SPCA will also get eight of their 40 required volunteer hours to graduate high school.

The SPCA will also bring adoptable animals in its new climate-controlled van, allowing participants to meet them in comfort.

Royal Canin is sponsoring the event and light snacks will be provided at the finish. Trombley said all donations are directed back into animal care.

“It’s just overall what the dogs and cats need that takes precedence,” Trombley said this week. “Whatever we make goes straight back into care for the animals.”

The shelter relies on adoption partners and community fundraisers to keep numbers manageable. Trombley noted partnerships with local pet stores, such as Ruffin’s and Pet Valu, help place cats and dogs into forever homes.

Financial challenges remain the most pressing issue for the SPCA. Trombley said keeping up with vehicle costs, building maintenance and equipment requires steady community backing.

More information and pledge forms will be available at the event, and at the Fort Erie SPCA on Jarvis Street.
