93rd birthday celebration planned for Douglas Memorial Hospital

Fort Erie Healthcare SOS plans to host a birthday party with cake for Douglas Memorial Hospital next month.

Heather Kelley, founder of Fort Erie Healthcare SOS, said the group’s mission is to keep Douglas Memorial’s urgent care centre open around the clock and explore the possibility of restoring the site to a full-service hospital.

“We’re a small group of volunteers who banded together to keep the urgent care at Douglas Memorial open 24/7,” Kelley said.

The urgent care centre operates from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and provides essential services such as X-rays, diagnostic services, chronic care, and palliative care beds on the second floor.

“I think it’s imperative right now that the people in Fort Erie have an urgent care centre they can rely on,” Kelley emphasized. “There is the whole issue with transportation and the lack of transportation to get in and out of Niagara Falls or St. Catharines.”

To raise awareness and support for their cause, Fort Erie Healthcare SOS will be hosting a 93rd birthday celebration for Douglas Memorial Hospital. It will take place on July 3, 2024 at Douglas Park from 4 to 7 p.m.

The event promises music, games, and cake, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and advocate for their local health care needs.

“We need to gather together and garner support from the community to keep the hospital open. We believe there’s strength in numbers,” Kelley said.

“The birthday party is our way of not only giving back to the community with a slice of cake, but also to attract the community to take a look to see that there’s an active campaign going on. That there is hope at the end of the road.”

Those interested in sponsoring the event are invited to contact Heather Kelley at (905) 993-2078.
