Wind gusts reach 110 km/h as outages and road closures hit Fort Erie

Gusts reaching 110 km/h knocked out power for thousands and forced multiple waterfront road closures across Fort Erie on Monday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada placed the town under a yellow wind warning as strong southwesterly winds battered the Lake Erie shoreline.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, Canadian Niagara Power reported 2,938 customers without electricity across Greater Fort Erie. Outages were spread across multiple areas, including Crystal Beach and Stevensville, as crews responded to damage caused by high winds and falling debris.

The wind warning, issued at 12:57 p.m., called for gusts of 90 to 110 km h, with winds expected to shift northwest later in the day and gradually ease overnight into Tuesday.

Residents have reported trees fallen over, power lines downed, sheds blown across yards, and heavy debris disrupting traffic.

The Town of Fort Erie confirmed several road closures near the Lake Erie shoreline due to limited or no emergency access in affected zones, including:

  • Point Abino Road from Erie Road to the dead end
  • Crystal Beach Waterfront Park
  • Crystal Beach Drive at Ridgeway Road
  • Lake Street at Crystal Beach Drive
  • Terrace Lane at Lake Street

Environment Canada warned of possible injury from flying or falling debris and potential damage to roofs, fences and soft structures.

Updates on road access will be available through the Town of Fort Erie as conditions continue to change into Tuesday.
