Waverly Beach concrete slabs and sand piles have been cleaned up

In October, a local government spokesperson said a large mess at Waverly Beach would be cleaned up by the end of the month.

It has been gone for about two weeks, meaning the town followed through on its promise.

For about five years, a pile of concrete slabs left over from a devastating October 2019 storm sat in a cordoned-off area.

The concrete sat next to piles of algae-filled sand as well.

This is an annual effort and the sand has been spread back into the beach as it is every fall, the town said in a statement earlier this week.

At the time of the 2019 storm, town officials said the municipality could be eligible for municipal disaster relief funding.

In 2021, the province announced more than $7 million for the town to cover costs related to damaged infrastructure caused by the 2019 storm, which would include the boardwalk.

The town is undertaking a Waverly Park Plan that will determine the form and function of the replacement for the destroyed trail section.

The plan is expected to be complete in 2025, with design and construction taking place in 2025-26.
