Transit disruptions possible in Fort Erie as labour talks continue

Niagara Transit is warning of a possible disruption to specialized and microtransit services due to a labour dispute between its provider and its union.
Voyago, who entered a contract with Niagara Transit in 2024, is currently engaged in labour negotiations with Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 846.
“While these negotiations are between Voyago and their union, we understand that a potential strike could impact the services they provide to our riders,” said Niagara Transit in a statement on its website.
If a strike occurs, services provided by Voyago may experience delays, cancellations, or be suspended until a resolution is achieved, including microtransit and specialized transit in Fort Erie.
Local microtransit in Lincoln, Grimsby, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Pelham, Port Colborne, Wainfleet, and West Lincoln would also be impacted.
Services unaffected by a potential job action would be conventional transit services (local and intermunicipal), specialized transit services in Welland, Niagara Falls, and St. Catharines, as well as microtransit services in Welland.
“Niagara Transit is committed to providing reliable transportation to our community,” reads the statement.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and communicating with Voyago to understand the potential impact on our services and have been advised contingency plans are being reviewed,” said Niagara Transit, adding that a status update will be provided to customers by email, on Niagara Transit’s website and social media channels, as soon as the information has been made available.
“We recognize the essential role these services play in the lives of our customers, and we are committed to keeping you informed as the situation develops,” the statement continues.
Customers are encouraged to consider alternative transportation options in case of service disruptions.

Earlier this year, Niagara Transit held a number of public engagement sessions across the region, seeking feedback on the future of service delivery.
Fort Erie’s session drew members of town and regional council and a number of concerns were shared at the event, including delays and missed pickups.
