Town reducing monthly fees on Crystal Beach parking passes

Monthly overnight parking passes at the Erie Road and Cambridge Road parking lot are dropping in price by more than half.

Councillors approved a motion from Tom Lewis at the June 22 meeting that directed staff to make changes to the pricing structure for the parking lot on overnight monthly passes. The existing cost of $125 will be brought down to $50.

“Feedback received from the CBBIA (Crystal Beach Business Improvement Area), local businesses, and the community has identified concerns regarding the affordability of the proposed overnight parking pass fee,” said Lewis, reading from his prepared motion.

The motion made no mention of other changes, though it did call on the town to “continue to work with the CBBIA and business community in the implementation and evaluation of parking management strategies to ensure the parking lot remains available and accessible for business patrons while supporting the economic vitality of the Crystal Beach commercial district.”

The town has implemented previous measures at the recommendation of the CBBIA, such as three-hour free parking, to help support the local business community and also to encourage customer turnover, especially during the busy summer season when visitors flock to the area.

Councillors offered no additional thoughts on the motion, with Lewis calling it self-explanatory.

According to the rown’s website, the first three hours of parking at the lot between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. are free. Visitors can stay for an extra two hours at an additional cost of $2 per hour. Overnight parking costs $5 per night.

Lewis’ motion also directs staff to ensure proper signage is made and installed to inform visitors.
