Town launches traffic calming studies on Sunset Drive and Pettit Road

The Town of Fort Erie has launched two traffic calming studies–one for Sunset Drive and another for Pettit Road–as part of its 2025 review of neighbourhood traffic issues.
Both corridors, running between Garrison Road and Bertie Street, are being evaluated under the town’s Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Policy, which was adopted by council in 2023 through bylaw 74-2023.
According to the town, the studies are being conducted in response to concerns raised by residents about vehicle speeds and traffic volumes.
Public input is currently being collected through online surveys, and the feedback will be used to inform draft traffic calming plans. Those plans will be reviewed by the town’s Traffic Coordinating Committee and presented to council for consideration.
The policy outlines a process that includes assessing current road conditions and considering a range of possible interventions. These may include physical changes such as speed humps or road narrowing, as well as non-physical approaches like signage, enforcement, or public education initiatives.
In a project description posted online, the town said that effective traffic calming may “reduce speeds, limit cut-through traffic, and discourage poor driving habits, such as distracted or aggressive driving.”
Surveys for both Sunset Drive and Pettit Road are open to those who live, work or own property in the study areas. The town has indicated that additional consultation opportunities will be offered once draft plans are available.
