‘Super bright’ apparent meteor streaks over Lake Erie Saturday morning

Fort Erie residents reported seeing a bright bluish-green streak of light crossing east to west over Lake Erie between 8:15 and 8:20 a.m. Saturday.
Three local residents told Fort Erie Radio they watched the light cross the daylight sky in a few seconds or less. Dozens more people on both sides of the Niagara River described the apparent meteor on social media, but no scientific agency had confirmed what caused it as of Saturday evening.
Amanda Barnes was driving up Ridge Road toward the Crystal Beach boat launch when the object crossed the lake in front of her.
“It was beautiful, super bright and looked so close,” Barnes told Fort Erie Radio.
Barnes said she watched the apparent meteor’s bright bluish-green body and long white tail for only a few seconds as it crossed the lake.
Colleen Iuticone saw the meteor from her porch near the same boat launch. Iuticone described a thin, clear silver streak that crossed the sky in a few seconds.
“At first I wasn’t sure what I just saw as it was daylight,” said Iuticone.
Rich Barry watched the meteor speed across the sky from his porch in Stevensville. Barry said he first mistook it for a piece of metallic ribbon blowing through the air.
Barry said he saw the meteor for about a second and a half.
Residents of Orchard Park and Hamburg, N.Y. posted similar sightings on Facebook, with several describing a blue or green flash. People in western Pennsylvania reportedly heard a loud boom from the meteor at about the same time.
On May 27, a softball-sized fireball from the main asteroid belt entered Earth’s atmosphere over Lake Erie at about 50 times the speed of sound and landed in upstate New York.
The American Meteor Society logged more than 30 Ontario sightings of that May fireball, including reports from St. Catharines.
