Stevensville may get accessible parking spot

Fort Erie’s accessibility advisory committee (AAC) is asking town staff to take another look at installing an accessible parking spot by the Stevensville post office.

Councillor Ann-Marie Noyes said the issue has been brought up with the town’s infrastructure staff as well as the traffic coordinating committee. It arose during the October 20 council meeting as councillors accepted the minutes from last month’s AAC meeting.

“We are quite keen that there should be an accessible parking spot by the post office,” she said, adding it’s the only post office in Fort Erie without an accessible spot. “Actually, there’s no accessible parking spaces at all in Stevensville, so we’re hoping infrastructure will take a second look at this.”

The minutes from the September AAC meeting describe an option committee members recommend to provide a space while meeting other requirements such as maintaining space around driveways.

“AAC members recommend moving the first spot back to allow driveway clearance (as per the traffic bylaw) and to create an accessible parking space with rear hatch marks for rear exiting vehicles (copying the accessible parking spaces provided in downtown Ridgeway) with a new curb cut for easy access to the sidewalk from the hatch marked area,” the minutes read.

Jordan Frost, acting director of infrastructure services, said town staff can bring the issue to the traffic coordinating committee (TCC).

“With a recommendation based on the analysis and then the TCC can formally review it again,” he said.

According to the AAC’s minutes, the town’s multi-year accessibility plan recommends the TCC work with the AAC to create additional accessible spaces.
