School bus driver faces charges after hit-and-run collision in Welland

A school bus driver is facing charges after a hit-and-run incident involving a pickup truck in Welland, Ontario, on January 24th, 2024.

Around 7:50 am, a yellow school bus carrying four children collided with a blue Ford F-150 pickup truck at the intersection of Canal Bank Street and Ontario Road. The female driver of the truck, 47, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by paramedics after firefighters assisted in her removal from the vehicle.

Initial reports indicated the school bus failed to stop at the scene and continued driving north on Prince Charles Drive. Responding to public calls reporting the bus sightings, police quickly located it near Thorold Road. Fortunately, neither the bus driver nor the children onboard sustained any significant injuries.

Both vehicles, however, suffered extensive damage and required towing. The 77-year-old bus driver, identified as a resident of Fort Erie, has been charged with careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision under the Highway Traffic Act.

Investigators from Niagara Regional Police Service’s 3 District are continuing their investigation and seeking any information from the public. Residents with knowledge of the incident are encouraged to contact them at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1023300, referencing incident number 24-8104.
