Salvation Army asks community for donations of school supplies and reusable bags

The Salvation Army Community & Family Services is asking the community for help.

Natalie Beres, community program co-ordinator at the Salvation Army, told Fort Erie Radio the group is collecting school supplies for their annual back-to-school assistance program.

The program is part of the Snacks n’ Sneakers campaign, done in partnership with Canadian Tire. Beres said Canadian Tire supplies approximately 100 pairs of running shoes and snacks.

Locally, the Salvation Army is gathering backpacks and other school supplies, like notebooks and pencils, for both elementary and high school students.

She added that lunch bags for elementary students are in high demand as well as reusable water bottles and school-safe snacks.

“We’re relying on the generosity of the Greater Fort Erie community,” said Beres. “They’ve always been a great supporter of ours and we’re thrilled to be able to provide this many students with the tools they need for success this year.”

Donations can be dropped off Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 255 Gilmore Road.

Additionally, the Salvation Army food bank, which operates Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12 to 3:30 p.m., is in need of reusable shopping bags. Those can also be dropped off at the same Gilmore Road location.

School kits are scheduled to begin going out on August 13 to the 105 local children registered for the program in July.
