Niagara police conduct RIDE checks in Fort Erie and St. Catharines

Niagara Regional Police conducted RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks on Thursday night. Approximately 300 vehicles in Fort Erie and St. Catharines were stopped, according to a news release.

Officers questioned drivers about their alcohol or drug consumption earlier in the evening. Fourteen drivers were asked to provide breath samples for analysis, all of which returned results within an acceptable range, says the release.

One driver failed to stop at a checkpoint when directed by police. The driver was stopped a few blocks away and charged with failing to stop when requested by a police officer, along with several other offences.

The RIDE program is part of the Niagara Regional Police Service’s ongoing efforts to reduce impaired driving through public education and enforcement.

Impaired driving remains the leading criminal cause of death in Canada.
