An event hosted by Advancing Crystal Beach (ACB) is meant to welcome the warm weather, while also celebrating and supporting the local community.
The March of Umbrellas, started about five years ago but with some interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to take place this year on Saturday, May 10.
Participants will gather at Queens Circle in Crystal Beach, and go on a walk along Derby and Erie roads, before heading back to the circle.
It is a colourful event where those who take part are asked to come toting decorated and fancy umbrellas.
Some people in the past have co-ordinated their outfits with the designs on their umbrellas, said organizer and ACB board member Cass Boutilier.
“It’s really a social event for people to come together,” she told Fort Erie Radio in an interview.
People can also make donations to support the many efforts of ACB, and bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to the food bank at Crystal Ridge Community Church, which is the same venue that ACB uses to host its monthly produce pop-up markets.
Held the weekend before Mother’s Day weekend, Boutilier said it also brings people out to see the many local shops, some who are just opening for the season.
“There’s a marketing element to it, too,” she said.
Lunch is being provided and those interested in participating are asked to register before April 30 by emailing Boutiler at cassboutilieracb@gmail.com.
Registration the day of the event opens at 10 a.m. and the walk will take about an hour, before people are invited to mingle at Queens Circle after.
There will also be prizes handed out to participants.
