Free appliance repair event May 4 at Beachcombers Seniors Centre

For those with an old appliance sitting around the house that doesn’t work anymore, consider bringing it to the Repair Café next week where it can be fixed or repaired at no charge.

The café will be hosted by the Beachcombers Seniors Centre (237 Ridge Rd. N) on May 4, 2024, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Paul Ellis, the event organizer, said a repair café invites members of the community to bring in items that they need help fixing or diagnosing at no cost.

Repair cafés have been around for about 15 years, he explained, adding that he has been involved for the last five to six years.

“We encourage people to think, can I fix it? Can it be repaired?” he said.

Those items could be lamps, fans, toasters, kettles, coffee makers, or other small appliances.

He said members of the Burlington Repair Café will be making the trip to Niagara to help repair items on May 4, and that he intends to expand the program here in Niagara.

“The public loves it,” he said, noting that other areas have shown interest in starting their own chapters.

He said when he approached the Beachcombers with the idea, they were “thrilled.”

He admits that not all items can be fixed, but they will do their best. After all, one of the primary objectives of a repair café is to divert things from the landfills for as long as possible.
