Fort Erie library offers free March Break programming for families

A giant board game stretching through the children’s section at Fort Erie Public Library’s Centennial branch will anchor a week of March Break activities that runs March 16 to 21 across the three library branches at no cost.

Children’s and Teen Librarian Serena Mariage told Fort Erie Radio that the line up of activities is meant to give families an opportunity to engage with their kids without spending excessive money.

“With the rising cost of everything, it’s hard to do extracurricular activities with kids. Everything’s expensive, so it’s nice that everything we offer is free,” said Mariage.

The giant board game, built throughout the children’s area at Centennial, will remain available throughout the week so families can drop in between scheduled events or visit even if registration programs are full.

Several programs require advance registration, including a two-part paper mâché 3D art workshop that begins Monday at 2 p.m. and concludes Thursday at noon at the Centennial Branch. Children will construct and paint a large canvas sculpture designed to look like a snake emerging from the frame.

Monday also includes morning story time and a DIY slap bracelet craft session at the Stevensville Branch.

Programming on Tuesday continues at Centennial with a morning story time featuring author Michelle Lair, followed by a screening of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ at 1:30 p.m. and a hands-on craft session where participants create cardboard Minecraft swords.

Wednesday’s schedule includes a Harry Potter trivia event at Centennial at 1 p.m., along with activities at the Crystal Ridge branch, including candy bingo and an “edible movie” where children decorate cookie mosaics while catching a screening of ‘Wreck-It Ralph.’

Thursday evening features a K-Pop Demon Hunters Party at 6 p.m. at the Centennial branch. The event includes themed crafts, music and karaoke. Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome.

Friday programming returns to Centennial with a morning magic performance by entertainer Scoop McCoy at 10 a.m., followed by a badminton tournament at 2 p.m.

Crystal Ridge will host a full day of family activities Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., including sports-themed Perler bead crafts, building time with oversized Big Blue Blocks and a guided children’s painting lesson.

Household spending often increases once families leave home for activities, according to Mariage, who described the library’s programs as an alternative that still provides structured entertainment and learning opportunities for children.

“I always joke that, you know, well, you’re bored at home, but when you leave the house, you automatically spend $100.”

Outside of March Break activities, the library system will also continue running public technology clinics in March and April. Staff help residents with digital skills and device questions during those sessions.

Full program listings and registration information appear through the library’s events calendar at fepl.ca.

Families can attend drop-in programs without registration while space remains available.
