Fort Erie hit by second outage hours after planned blackout

Canadian Niagara Power (CNP) may have celebrated too soon.

A planned power outage at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday “lasted four minutes,” according to the company’s X/Twitter account, despite initially being expected to take up to a half hour.

The planned outage was announced earlier this month, with a second scheduled for September 14.

Just 12 hours later, shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday, Fort Erie Radio began receiving reports of power outages across Greater Fort Erie.

“Power outage…within the area of Garrison Road,” the utility provider posted to social media. “Crews have been dispatched.”

CNP later clarified that the outage was affecting “Garrison Road to Dominion Road and Helena Street to Albany Street,” although reports received by Fort Erie Radio suggested that the outage may have also briefly affected parts of Ridgeway and Crystal Beach.

At 5:14 p.m., CNP declared that “all power” had been restored to the town, but offered no explanation for the additional outage.
