Fort Erie Film Circuit lets film fans pick May TIFF screening

Filmgoers will get to vote on the group’s May screening when the Fort Erie Film Circuit launches its new Audience Choice ballot at the Meridian Centre for the Arts next Monday.
The volunteer-run committee, which partners with the Toronto International Film Festival to bring festival-screened films to Fort Erie, will hand out ballots at three upcoming screenings, with voters choosing between the films ‘Shook’ and ‘The Wedding Banquet.’
“We want the audience to have a little bit of ownership of what they see,” said Kathryn Rogers, founding chair of the Fort Erie Film Circuit, to Fort Erie Radio.
The first chance to vote comes January 26, when the group screens ‘Jane Austen Wrecked My Life’ inside Greater Fort Erie Secondary School.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m., with tickets set at $10.
The Audience Choice ballot will also be available at screenings on March 2 and March 30, and all voters will be entered for a door prize donated by the Barrel Restaurant.
“They’re like the hidden gems. It’s not the type of film you would see at Cineplex, not one of the big blockbuster franchise type movies,” said Rogers.
The Film Circuit runs eight screenings a year, with monthly shows from September to November, then January through May. The group typically sees about 120 people attend when the weather cooperates.
“It’s a way of developing community, strengthening community ties, and it’s a way of adding to the cultural life of Fort Erie,” said Rogers.
The Film Circuit is run by a six-person volunteer committee and started its first season in 2018 after Rogers moved to Fort Erie in 2016.
“When I moved to Fort Erie and found that there was no film circuit here, I thought, ‘Well, I guess I’ll start another one.’”
Screenings take place in the school’s 500-seat theatre, which Rogers described as a full movie-theatre experience with a large screen.
The group is also looking for a new group or business to provide coffee and treats between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. during screenings.
