Fort Erie Arts Council hosting Women’s Day gallery on Saturday

The Fort Erie Arts Council (FEAC) is celebrating International Women’s Day with an event that will showcase the creativity of the many females it has within its organization.

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., about 30 artists will have their work on display at its hub and gallery located at 246 Ridge Road in downtown Ridgeway.

It will also be a chance to welcome the community back to the space the arts council has operated out of since 2017 after it temporarily closes its doors in January and February.

After Saturday, the gallery will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then also on Thursdays once the farmers’ market down the street starts for the season, FEAC president Donna MacLeod told Fort Erie Radio in an interview on Monday.

Many of the volunteers who are the lifeblood of the arts council travel during the winter, and there isn’t as much foot traffic in downtown Ridgeway in the winter, which is why a break is taken early in the year.

The Canadian government says International Women’s Day is a time to “recognize and celebrate women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.”

It’s also a chance to “highlight the progress made in advancing women’s rights and the ongoing efforts needed to ensure their full participation in all aspects of society.”

MacLeod said more than half of the artists involved with FEAC are female, about 65 per cent.

She said Saturday’s event is a chance to capitalize on all the talented women who are involved with the organization.

“We support their creativity, give them a chance to highlight their work, and talk to people about the stories about their artwork,” said MacLeod.

Food and refreshments will also be served at the event.
