He was known to hit the road at all hours of the day and night to tend to the sick and ailing, and soon Dr. Allan Vincent could have a Stevensville road named after him.
Councillors passed a motion by Councillor Joan Christensen at the December 15 meeting that called for a major street within the subdivision being built at 2649 Stevensville Road to be named in honour of the late family doctor.
Christensen described Vincent, who lived to be 92, as “someone who never wavered from his beliefs in providing support and care.”
Locally, she said Vincent was known to respond to house calls at any time, heading out to homes in Port Colborne and Fort Erie.
“No one was ever neglected,” she said.
In addition to his nearly 40 years as a primary health care provider locally, Vincent also made yearly trips to Central and South America, where he helped provide free medical care to impoverished areas.
“Some of the very remote people who lived there suffered from many diseases, a lot of which were brought by people coming into the country,” Christensen said.
Christensen said she spoke with Vincent’s son Peter, who recalled his dad’s commitment to the communit.
“Dr. Arthur Allan Bessborough Vincent passed away on July 12, 1990, following a short illness,” reads his obituary in the Fort Erie Times-Review on July 17 that same year.
Vincent was also named an honorary member of the Greater Niagara General Hospital in recognition of his contributions there.
