Former councillor Rick Shular to be remembered at Fort Erie Race Track

A former town councillor will be remembered later today at the Fort Erie Race Track.

The fourth event on Monday’s program is a memorial race for Rick Shular, who served Ward 2 from 2003 until 2014 when he died in late December at age 68.

The race in his name has been an annual tradition and tributes to him are already circulating.

“The race is a great opportunity to reconnect with Rick’s family and friends and to remember Rick as a truly unique individual who touched the lives of many residents through his kindness and caring and his love of Fort Erie,” said Ward 1 Councillor George McDermott on social media.

McDermott said he was a “dear friend and mentor” who had a wealth of knowledge with regards to municipal politics.

“I have sat in his chair since I came to council hoping that I could be as strong and effective as Rick, but they are huge shoes to fill and I can only aspire to be as good a man as he was,” said McDermott.

In 2015, a byelection was held to fill Shular’s seat, which was won by Stephen Passero.

“Every hour of Rick’s day was spent dedicated to our town, contributing to numerous organizations and always focused on raising funds and awareness for the greatest needs of our community,” said Passero.

The race is scheduled to start at 4:24 p.m. today.

Shular was a member of the Fort Erie Kinsmen for 48 years and was also involved with the Niagara Shrine Club.
