A note posted on the front door of the Fort Erie Planet Fitness on January 30 reads, “We are closed due to flooding circumstances. Reopening is to be determined. ~ Sorry!”

Fort Erie Radio confirmed with a local manager by phone that a flood had occurred at the site and was still being repaired as of Friday afternoon. The manager said they could not comment further due to policy.

In an email sent to members Friday, Planet Fitness said a frozen pipe required the location to shut down while repairs take place.

The email directed Fort Erie members to use other Planet Fitness locations in St. Catharines or Welland regardless of membership status.

Those locations are at 525 Welland Avenue in St. Catharines and 835 Ontario Road in Welland.

Planet Fitness said it will notify members once the Fort Erie location reopens.

On January 25, the Town of Fort Erie issued a cold weather advisory warning that water pipes and service lines can freeze during prolonged extreme cold.

The warning advised shutting off and draining outdoor taps, disconnecting hoses, sealing air leaks in homes and garages and installing insulated pipe sleeves or approved heat tape on exposed pipes in unheated areas such as basements, crawl spaces, attics and garages.
