Firefighters battle blaze on Queenston Blvd.; damage estimated at $450K

About 30 firefighters from three stations battled a blaze at a home at the corner of Queenston Boulevard and Joseph Street Wednesday afternoon.

The call came in shortly before 1 p.m. and the fire department was expected to be on scene for “several more hours,” Fire Chief Mark Schmitt told Fort Erie Radio at about 3:30 p.m.

One person was inside the home at the time but was removed and taken to hospital as a “precaution,” he said.

A dog also escaped without injuries, he explained.

The cause of the fire and whether it is suspicious are part of an ongoing investigation, Schmitt said Wednesday afternoon.

Schmitt said the cost of the damage is currently estimated at about $450,000.

Fort Erie Radio attended the scene at about 1:30 p.m. to find firefighters attacking the fire near the rear of the home as smoke billowed from the structure and into the neighbourhood.

Niagara Regional Police, Fort Erie Fire Department, and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were all on scene at that time.

The fire also drew many neighbours out of their home who were watching from their own properties and on the road away from emergency crews who were working to get the fire under control.
