Film nights return to the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre

Hot soup and documentary films are drawing people together again at the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre.
The centre has relaunched its biweekly film nights, offering free plant-based meals and health-focused documentaries. Organizers say the events are open to everyone and aim to support community wellness while breaking down misconceptions about who can attend.
“I was born with an abnormal heart. I’m not even 40 yet, and I’ve already had to have heart and brain surgery. So I truly believe that nutrition can play a very big role in your overall life,” said Dakota Bennett, program coordinator at the centre.
Bennett told Fort Erie Radio he cooks the meals himself, preparing soups, salads and pasta with a focus on vegetarian and vegan dishes. The screenings are followed by group discussions where attendees are welcomed to share reflections and ideas about nutrition, health and lifestyle.
A key takeaway, according to Bennett, is that the film nights and most programs at the Friendship Centre are open to the entire community and not exclusive to Indigenous residents.
“One of the stereotypes we deal with is the word native,” said Bennett, referring to those who falsely believe the programming offered by the Friendship Centre is intended for Indigenous residents only.
It’s a misconception Bennett says he’s working hard to break.
The next film night will be held October 28, with screenings continuing every other Tuesday. Details are posted on the centre’s Facebook page.
Alongside film nights, the centre also runs weekly mental health sessions called Mindful Matters, men’s support groups, free counselling, cultural activities such as sweat lodges, and educational programs for teens and adults completing high school credits. All programs are free and open to the wider Fort Erie community to take part in.
Elders’ programs, one-on-one counselling and seasonal events like the upcoming Halloween gathering are also offered, ensuring support is available for residents of all ages.
