Community Living revives gala to raise $55K for accessibility

A Fort Erie non-profit that supports people with disabilities is bringing back its signature fundraiser after a year away, with a $55,000 target to buy an accessible van the government will not pay for.
Community Living Fort Erie (CLFE), which has operated for more than 60 years, suspended the event in 2024 during a staffing transition that included the retirement of longtime organizer Marg Fidler. The return comes as the organization works to rebuild donor relationships while closing a gap in its transportation capacity that has limited programming for the people it serves.
‘The Frosted Fort Gala: A Night at the Speakeasy’ is scheduled for November 14 at the Fort Erie Leisureplex, replacing the previous Christmas Around the World event held years prior.
The organization’s passport services program helps people with disabilities take part in community activities, from swimming lessons to day trips. Without its own van, the program depends on outside transportation, which limits how many outings it can run and when.
“The government doesn’t necessarily fund vans for us, so we need to get another additional fleet van so we can continue to provide the best service and support for our people,” Sheldon Samlall, CLFE’s community engagement and development manager, told Fort Erie Radio.
Samlall, who joined CLFE during the transition period and is now leading the event’s redevelopment, acknowledged the challenge of stepping into the role after Fidler’s long tenure.
“I understand she’s been a community staple and everybody knows her by face and name, whereas nobody necessarily knows Sheldon,” he said.
Fidler, though retired, has been helping Samlall connect with past sponsors.
“She has no obligation to do so, but it speaks about her passion and commitment to the organization,” said Samlall.
The evening will feature a 1920s-themed dinner, live music, a speakeasy-themed photobooth, a raffle and a 50/50 draw.
Sponsorship packages range from $500 for photobooth branding to $5,000 for title sponsorship, which includes a table for 16, media recognition and an Instagram reel. Individual tickets are $60.
“With us having access to our own vehicle, we get to maintain the dignity of those who may have mobility issues and ensure that they can live their lives to the fullest,” he said.
The fundraiser opened ticket and donation sales early to build momentum. Volunteers are also being recruited to help run the evening.
Tickets and sponsorship inquiries are available through the CLFE CanadaHelps page or by contacting Samlall at ssamlall@clfe.ca or (905) 871-6770 extension 239.
