CNP to replace 50 utility poles on Erie Road by June 2026

In lieu of groundhogs, power tools and road closures can often be used to mark the end of winter and beginning of construction season in Canada.

Crews have started replacing approximately 50 utility poles along Erie Road between Derby Road and Beachwood Road, a Canadian Niagara Power (CNP) infrastructure project expected to be competed by June 2026. The work may bring intermittent road closures and planned electricity outages for nearby homes and businesses.

The months-long rebuild is part of CNP’s ongoing effort to upgrade local electrical infrastructure and reduce the risk of future outages.

Kristine Carmichael, director of corporate and customer services at CNP, told Fort Erie Radio that at different stages of construction, drivers may encounter full road closures or alternating single lane traffic along portions of Erie Road.

“There may be power outages throughout the project and CNP will provide advance notice for any planned outages,” said Carmichael in a written response.

CNP has already issued a public notice about the project on its website and social media accounts. The utility has also contacted affected customers directly by telephone and email with details about the work and possible service interruptions.

CNP did not release a total cost for the project. Funding will come from its capital rebuild program, which finances infrastructure upgrades through distribution rates and company revenues. Those rates and revenue programs fall under periodic review by the Ontario Energy Board, which regulates electricity distributors across the province.
