Christensen asks staff to consider additional lighting for parks

As Yogi Berra, a man who knew his way around parks, once said: It gets late early out there.
With the winter solstice nearing and daylight in short supply this time of year, the classic quote from a former baseball great rings true not just for Yankee Stadium but for the public parks in Fort Erie. And a councillor is asking staff to look at lighting options that will allow the public to enjoy local parks later in the evening and earlier in the morning.
“I’ve had a number of people speak to me about the lack of after-dark lighting in the Crystal Ridge Community Park,” said Councillor Joan Christensen at the December 16 council meeting.
With town parks open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., the councillor said a lack of lighting makes them largely inaccessible for several hours a day, especially in the winter.
“It’s impossible to use after the fall of darkness or before sunrise,” she said.
“So effectively we’re paying for very expensive and lovely parks that aren’t necessarily accessible because of lack of light.”
And while Crystal Ridge was the park she’d heard comments from, Christensen asked staff to look at all the municipality’s major parks, both in relation to town policy and a review of what kind of infrastructure they have.
“I’m not saying every park, but certainly a large park like Crystal Ridge,” she said.
