Ceremony paying tribute to lost loved ones a chance to ‘make new memories’

An annual event in Fort Erie started about 20 years ago continues to remember local residents who are no longer with us.

Taking place on December 11 is a holiday memorial service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, hosted by Benner and Williams Funeral Services.

It is a religious ceremony that pays tribute to people who have died this year as well as many years ago, said Darren Flagg, managing partner of both funeral homes.

It’s a chance for people to “make new memories,” said Flagg, who is also a town councillor.

An average of about 150 names are included in the ceremony each year, and for many families, it is also an opportunity for those who forego a funeral to celebrate their loved ones.

“We’re finding that it’s closure for some families,” he said.

He also said there are some individuals who attend each year to remember people who passed away as long ago as 40 years.

“Even though people have been gone for a while, you don’t forget about them,” said Flagg.

A Christmas event, there is music at 6:30 p.m. before the ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually, said Flagg.

Anyone wishing to have their loved one included can contact either funeral home at (905) 871-0444 or (905) 894-1161.
