Breast cancer awareness talk coming to the library on Thursday

Fort Erie teens will hear directly from a national cancer awareness leader when she speaks at the Fort Erie Public Library on Thursday afternoon.

Team Shan: Breast Cancer Awareness for Young Women president Lorna Larsen will lead a session at the library’s Centennial branch on Gilmore Road. The free presentation runs Thursday from 4:15 to 5 p.m.

The talk is part of a campaign across Niagara during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Larsen, a registered nurse and health promotion specialist, founded Team Shan in memory of her daughter Shanna, who died at the age of 24 from breast cancer.

“This is in memory of a young woman who was 24, which is very young, and they created the charity in her name,” said Serena Mariage, children’s and teen librarian at Fort Erie Public Library.

She told Fort Erie Radio the event is aimed at high school students but anyone is welcome to attend.

“(Larsen is) going to be talking about the disease and how young women can be aware of the signs and be mindful of their health,” Mariage said on Wednesday.

The library’s youth advisory committee, made up of local high school students, is expected to attend.

No registration is required.
