Border traffic down 22 per cent at Peace Bridge

Travel across the Peace Bridge is down 22 per cent over last year, according Chuck Schumer, minority leader of the U.S. Senate.
A news release from Schumer’s office provides data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including figures related to Niagara’s four border crossings.
In May 2024, there were 423,080 auto crossings into the U.S. at the Peace Bridge.
But in May 2025, it was down to 327,207, according to the news release.
Schumer, a Democrat from New York, blames the decrease in crossings on ongoing tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
“As Canadians cancel trips to the United States because of Trump’s mistreatment of our closest ally and trading partner, new data shows nearly 400,000 fewer travelers crossed the upstate New York-Canadian border via land in May 2025 compared to May 2024 according to CBP, a whopping nearly 25-per-cent decrease,” said Schumer’s news release.
There was nearly a 29-per-cent decrease at the Rainbow Bridge, a nearly five-per-cent decline at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, and a 25-per-cent decrease at the Whirlpool Bridge.
