UPDATE | Fishing derby rescheduled to June 1 due to poor weather

UPDATE | MAY 22, 2025 @ 11:26 A.M.: The children’s fishing derby has been rescheduled for next Sunday, June 1, due to inclement weather.

ORIGINAL STORY | MAY 22, 2025 @ 3:27 A.M.: An annual event taking place at the Fort Erie Conservation Club is hoping to reel in young participants once again.

The Kevin Hartman Children’s Fishing Derby started about 35 years ago and is an event for kids 12 and under to spend the day outdoors and also try to win some prizes.

It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the club on Sunday.

Recent editions have drawn close to 70 participants, said club chair Bob Jackson.

Kids are asked to bring their own worms and fishing equipment but will also receive “goody bags,” Jackson told Fort Erie Radio.

First place will receive a trophy as well as a new rod and reel, and second place will also take home a rod and reel, donated by the Hartman family.

“It’s a great day for the kids to get outside with their parents,” he added.

No registration is required and participants can just arrive the day of the event.
