All public beaches in Fort Erie have been deemed safe for swimming, according to the latest water quality update from Niagara Region Public Health issued Sunday.
As of noon on June 8, Bernard Avenue Beach, Crescent Beach, Bay Beach and Waverly Beach all met provincial water safety standards.
Testing at each of these beaches showed E. coli levels within acceptable limits as set by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Beaches are considered unsafe when a single sample contains 400 or more E. coli bacteria per 100 millilitres, or when the geometric mean of five samples is 200 or more.
Results for Fort Erie beaches were based on testing conducted between June 3 and June 5.
Public health officials advise against swimming during or shortly after heavy rainfall, when the water appears cloudy, or when there are large numbers of birds present, as these conditions can contribute to elevated bacteria levels.
