Crescent Park blaze guts garage, causes $600K damage

Fort Erie’s fire department is investigating a blaze in Crescent Park that caused more than $600,000 in damage early Friday morning.

Three stations, a total of more than 30 firefighters, were called to a home at the corner of Garrison and Buffalo roads shortly after 1 a.m. to find a fully involved structure fire.

One male was inside at the home but was able to escape safely after smoke alarms did their job and alerted him.

He was assessed by paramedics but wasn’t treated for any injuries, Fire Chief Mark Schmitt told Fort Erie Radio Friday morning.

It is believed that the fire started in the garage, the part of the home that suffered the majority of the structural damage.

An electric vehicle was inside the garage, but Schmitt said he “can’t confirm that had anything to do with the fire starting.”

Crews left the scene around 4:30 a.m. once the fire was under control but investigation will be continuing most of Friday, said Schmitt.

He said the Ontario Fire Marshal was notified, but won’t be attending the scene.

Schmitt said the incident is not being treated as suspicious, but also noted it is “early” in the investigation.
