No injuries in ‘minor fire’ at local restaurant on Saturday

There were no injuries when Southsides Bar and Grill had to be evacuated Saturday afternoon due to a “minor fire,” says Niagara Regional Police (NRP) spokesperson Constable Luke Lindley.
At 1 p.m., officers responded with the Fort Erie Fire Department and Niagara Emergency Medical Service paramedics to the popular spot along the river near the Peace Bridge for service.

Police arrived on scene and learned that the building had been evacuated and there were no reported injuries.
Fort Erie Fire Department attended to do a scene assessment. Fire Chief Mark Schmitt told Fort Erie Radio on Sunday that the “issue originated in the kitchen” and that the establishment’s ownership will bringing in a technician to “fix the issue.”

Lindley said, according to the NRP’s report, that the incident was a result of what appeared to be a build up of gas that had been ignited.
There was no damage to the building, he added.
Police had the parkway closed between Queen and Forsythe streets for about an hour.
