Car fire damages outside of High Street home in Fort Erie

A car fire damaged the outside of a home on Fort Erie’s High Street on Thursday afternoon, but no injuries were reported.

Fort Erie Fire Chief Mark Schmitt told Fort Erie Radio crews reached the home around 4:30 p.m. and quickly brought the fire under control.

The department upgraded the call from a car fire to a structure fire after a firefighter living across the street reported the flames were reaching the house, Schmitt said.

“There was no extension into the house, but it did damage to the exterior of the home,” said Schmitt.

The people living in the home were able to stay there overnight, Schmitt said.

Mayor-elect Tom Insinna watched crews work from his front porch, Schmitt said. Insinna lives next door and was among the first people who called 911.

The fire destroyed the car, which Schmitt said had mechanical problems just before it caught fire. The department did not consider the fire suspicious.

Firefighters spread absorbent material over a small fuel spill the car left on High Street, and the town’s roads department cleared it away. Crews spent about two hours at the scene.
