How to catch Fort Erie’s municipal election debate on September 29

Fort Erie voters will hear directly from candidates in the town’s municipal election at a public debate on September 29, four weeks before election day.

The South Niagara Chambers of Commerce is hosting the debate from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 on Garrison Road. The chamber said the debate is open to everyone and nobody needs to register.

Fort Erie Radio will broadcast the debate live for residents who cannot attend in person.

Four candidates are running for mayor in Fort Erie: Mike Campbell, Regional Councillor Tom Insinna, Juan Liu and Mayor Wayne Redekop.

Redekop is seeking a fourth straight term after serving as mayor from 1997 to 2006 and again since 2014.

Fort Erie’s next mayor will also hold the town’s only seat on Niagara regional council, which provincial legislation cut to the region’s 12 mayors and a chair appointed by the province.

Thirteen candidates are competing for council seats in Wards 2 through 5. Councillor George McDermott in Ward 1 and Councillor Ann-Marie Noyes in Ward 6 won their seats by acclamation after facing no opposition.

The Town of Fort Erie will hold advance polls at the Fort Erie Leisureplex banquet hall on October 14 and October 17.

Internet voting opens October 5 and closes at 8 p.m. on election day, October 26.
