Family Fun Day targets health gaps at Crystal Beach Co-op

A mobile dental clinic will roll into the Crystal Beach Co-op on Tuesday, part of a free event aimed at residents who can’t easily reach health and food services on their own.
Advancing Crystal Beach (ACB) and Niagara Region Public Health are hosting the Family Fun Day at the co-op’s community building at 1 Esme Lane, near Derby Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day also includes a fresh-food market, youth employment support and a barbecue.
Many residents have limited mobility and some have no dental coverage, ACB president Scott Boumeester told Fort Erie Radio.
“It’s a tough going there,” Boumeester said. “The best sign of a caring community is how we take care of the less fortunate people within our community.”
The region’s mobile dental clinic will offer services for children and adults, according to the event poster. Boumeester said children can have their teeth examined and get a fluoride treatment.
“A lot of those people there probably don’t have any benefit plans at all,” he said.
The event grew out of ACB’s monthly pop-up food market at Crystal Ridge Community Church. Some co-op residents wanted to take part and couldn’t make the trip.
“A lot of people in there are not mobile, and it was hard for them to get to the church,” Boumeester said.
ACB responded by bringing a market into the co-op once a month, he said, and the group’s work with families there has grown since.
Layla Butler, a youth employment program facilitator with Community Living Fort Erie, will be on hand with information about jobs, training and volunteering for young people.
Public health workers Jackie Winger and Tricia Scott helped organize the outreach. Co-op board president Lesley Willick and social committee member Kathleen Caoson helped plan the day.
There will also be an inflatable attraction for children, supplied by Storring Inflatables of Port Colborne.
