The Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) has reopened in both directions in Fort Erie after being shut down for more than an hour Thursday morning due to multiple collisions and vehicles stuck in the ditch.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the highway was closed shortly after 8 a.m. between Bowen Road and Netherby Road as officers and emergency crews responded to what police described as treacherous road conditions.
Police say they received numerous calls from the area, including reports of vehicles in the ditch and a collision involving two tractor-trailers. Several motorists were also reported stranded along the stretch of highway.
The closure remained in place through the morning rush before traffic began moving again around 9:30 a.m., police said.
The affected section of the QEW runs through Fort Erie and is a key commuter and commercial route linking the Niagara region to the Greater Toronto Area and the Peace Bridge.
