Car crash cuts power to 1,179 Fort Erie homes on Christmas

Christmas dinners were briefly lit by candlelight for some Fort Erie residents after a car struck a hydro pole and cut electricity to more than 1,000 homes.

Canadian Niagara Power (CNP) told Fort Erie Radio that a car accident caused damage to a hydro pole on December 25, prompting the company to briefly shut down some areas for crews to repair the damage safely.

The outage affected 1,179 customers at 6:11 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes.

“There was a need to do some switching to make the area safe for our crews to work,” said Kristine Carmichael, director of corporate and customer services.

The utility initially estimated as many as 7,138 customers could lose power for about two hours before crews assessed the damage.

Power was restored after the short interruption, and no further outages were reported.
